Mental Health Legislation Needs To Be Supportive & Respectful

Following Minister Kathleen Lynch’s publication today of the Expert Group Review of the Mental Health Act, 2001, I have welcomed the recognition for a more person centred approach and the need for further support and respect when it comes to our mental health legislation.

The completion of this review which was carried out in consultation with service users, carers and other relevant stakeholders delivers on the Programme for Government.  The Expert Group reported back to Minister Lynch with 165 recommendations, the majority of which relate to mental health legislation.

I have long advocated that we need to take a person centred and respectful approach in dealing with mental health and coinciding legislation.  The view point of people dealing with mental health issues must be taken into account.  In as far as possible, people need to be considered and actively involved in their own treatment and recovery process.  Service users deserve to have their views taken into account and their dignity maintained while receiving excellent care in an appropriate environment.

I look forward to engaging with Minister Lynch on the proposed general scheme of a bill reflecting the work of the Expert Group and on providing the best mental health care for people across the country.
