Symphysiotomy payment scheme details announced
Labour Senator Mary Moran has welcomed the Government announcement of the details of the Symphysiotomy Payment Scheme with the Payment Scheme commencing on Monday, 10th November for symphysiotomy survivors.
'Following the announcement on 1st July that approximately €34m would be made available for an ex-gratia scheme, I have continually conveyed the urgency in announcing this scheme in light of the fact many of the survivors are elderly or suffering from ill-health.
'I am delighted that the viewpoints of the women were sought and involved in the setting up of this scheme which will commence on Monday, 10th November. I have strongly urged my Government colleagues that the scheme should firstly, be made available urgently and should be simple as well as non-confrontational in accordance with the views expressed by the women. It is important as well that the women's request for an independent Assessor has been honoured and former High Court Judge Maureen Harding Clark has been appointed in this role to oversee the implementation of the ex-gratia Payment Scheme. There will be three levels of awards--€50,000, €100,000 and €150,000.
'Any woman who underwent a surgical symphysiotomy now has the option to consider this Payment Scheme as well as any other course of action they wish to consider. I have always advocated that each individual woman should have the opportunity to independently choose what is best for their situation. Anyone who would like further information can contact me and I would be happy to assist them.'
