Call For Magdalene Women Concerns To Be Addressed

I have called for the concerns raised by Magdalene survivors regarding the Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014 to be addressed by Minister Frances Fitzgerald as a matter of urgency.

I am calling on Minister Fitzgerald to provide a dedicated advocacy support unit in consultation with Magdalene survivors and a HSE medical card specific to Magdalene women to be provided. After speaking with Magdalene campaigners and receiving numerous representations from survivors and family members I am aware that these are two crucial and urgent issues for Magdalene survivors.

It was an incredibly moving and historic moment when Taoiseach Enda Kenny apologised to the Magdalene women over two years ago. We have recognised the hardship and suffering inflicted on these women and we need to ensure that we provide the appropriate and long awaited supports for these ladies.
